Training for the Channel is tough - towel duty

I just want to dispel any rumors that training for the Channel can be construed as fun.  Here am I on towel duty, helping tidy up after the naked Bay Bridge swim in honor of Earth Day (thanks Paul).

Because of that strong ebb, I had never swam more quickly past Aquatic Park. The toughest part for me was enduring the big waves and cold from the Golden Gate Bridge to Ocean Beach. I was happy with the boat pilots especially when I found my smoothie filled thermos (Yummy!). I followed my pod the entire swim, and this time we swam backstroke looking up at the bridge. Outside the Golden Gate Bridge the high rolling, waves grew even higher. I saw a sea lion close-by, and kept feeling touches on my feet. I was delighted to be swimming in a pod (me, Julian, Kara), versus swimming solo. I was cold, numb, and fatigued by the time Ocean Beach came into view. At this time, I had experienced an adrenaline rush and swam straight into the beach alongside a surfer. I was first to the beach and was met by legendary SERC swimmer, Jon Hathaway, who had pointed me towards my stash of warm clothes on the beach. I failed miserably at beach dressing because I was frozen numb. Another friendly SERC member, Molly, warmed me up with a blanket, hot drink, and walked me from the beach to the car. I had noticed that there weren't any newspaper reporters, newspaper video cameras, or fans waiting to interview or get autographs of any of the swimmers. I was the last to stuff into Melissa B’s car. Melissa B. cranked-up the heater in the car and mentioned that she wants to swim it next year. Julian looked way too comfortable in the front seat, not showing signs of being very cold or fatigued while Paul, Kara, and I were in the backseat shivering underneath blankets.
